That's because you've been conditioned to believe that guns are "dangerous"

I have however been brought up in an enviroment where knives are part
of everyday life , but it doesn't mean I'd be happy if everyone
carried a 6 inch carving knife up their sleeve.

The problem comes when you try to legislate. They want a four year
mandatory sentence for carrying a knife. Yet my family sometimes goes
hiking, and in our survival belts are plasters, bandages, space blanket,
and yes, a knife. Do we deserve 4 years in prison for wanting to
survive?

Yes, you have a mobile phone which is sufficient to cover all
emergencies. You don't even need proper walking boots these days, a pair
of trainers will do.

are you giving this advice to see if anyone on the group is capable of
winning a darwin award?

Being stuck out in the middle of nowhere, with the weather suddenly
turning, no mobile phone signal, a sodden pair of trainers and bugger
all suitable equipment. That would be one of the many recopies for
disaster that often lead to people dying or needing to be rescued at
great expense.

Indeed. Several times on Dartmoor I've had to bundle the kids into the
tent and sit it out. Thank God we were carrying what we were. Or there'd
have been another £100,000 rescue search in progress. And no, we were in
a valley most of the time, so no mobile signal.

But we had some lovely trout for tea :-)

Oh yes. Never cook in a tent. Even if its pissing down outside and you
need hot food. Or to boil water for drinking (there's *always* a dead
sheep just upstream).
