In the real world bioethanol cannot be 'easily produced'. It requires
a lot of energy, loads of CO2 emissions and fertilisers etc. Biofuels
from waste are still a distant prediction which may or may not become
viable. Until then they are produced mostly from food crops.
In what way is using the "scrap" from sugar beet that would normally be
thrown away using food crops, surely it making best use of the crop?

It is a table of conversions provided by the US National Institute of
Standards and Technology. Find section 4, headed "TABLES OF UNITS OF
MEASUREMENT". Look at the eighth table. It helpfully states that 1
cubic metre equals 1000 litres.

Now, let's look at the actual numbers posted. The link referred to
says "For Each tonne of Sugarbeet: 0.108m3 of bioethanol is produced."
Do you know how to multiply by 1000? You move the decimal point three
places to the right (do I need to post a link to prove this, or can we
assume some basic maths?)
So, moving the decimal point three places to the right gives ... 108
litres. Wowee. So you were two orders of magnitude out. Just as
everyone said.
Now put that spade down - the good people of Sydney do not want you

Yes but the sugarbeet source and calc I gave wasn't based on waste was
it. No doubt if sugarbeet waste was used the yield would be much
lower. BTW, what part of the sugarbeet is waste?
Um, Schmoug, in the case you chose to refer to, all of it is waste,
because it is grown on land that is currently set-aside. In other
words, land that is not currently used to grow food. Please explain
why you think that using currently unused land could affect food
prices.
IIRC Steve F mentioned that a lot of the land being used for biofuel
crops isn't fit to grown crops suitable for humans to use as food.
