I took about 4-6 hours of lessons in all, mainly to ensure I hadn't picked
up any bad habits and to familiarise myself with the test routes. That and
only one test made it pretty reasonable. 45 hours seems a bit OTT unless
there is no way you can otherwise get the practice in the normal way with
a suitable full-licence holder accompanying.
The DSA also say that the average driver will have had 22 hours of private
practice. When I took my test, the recommendation was to take one hour of
private practice for every hour of instruction, with 20 hours of instruction
as a minimum, so I suspect a fair bit of the 45 hours is spent on training
for the theory test, rather than on actual driving.
