Then explain the M42 hard shoulder lane?
I've not come across a single hold up in the time it's been open.
Is that because of the extra lane, or the regulated lower speed limits?
than what are signed now.
I've used that route a few times as one of several ways of getting between
Oxfordshire and the M1 for Yorkshire (the others being the A46 passing near
Warwick and Coventry and the A43 passing near Silverstone). It's difficult
to know which is the best route, but the M42 route is certain tedious:
although it's possible to do M40 at 70 and A42 at 70 if HGVs don't get in
the way, the M42 section in the middle seems soooo slooow with its 60, 50 or
even 40 restrictions. I'm not convinced that it flows any better when the
speed is restricted by law compared with it being restricted by the speed of
the car in front on a busy motorway still with a nominal limit of 70.
