That's strange, from your previous postings I had formed the opinion
that it was road haulage that was struggling to provide drivers for
all the work on offer. The railways appear to be handling the large
increase in power station coal quite well.

So why the increase in bulk goods traffic by road?

Because *everything* is increasing. Both rail and road are shifting
more freight than before, primarily to meet the insatiable demands of
city-dwellers like Doug who sit at home and want everything delivered
to them on a plate.
