never heard for linux?
What has that got to do with the hardware, hypocrite?
you are saying that vista needs more powerful hardware which is true;
Its true but a misquote.
Linux does not and its user base is growing so thats a sign that the
second hand machines could be given new useful lives without needing
to be recycled into scrap parts.
For many people linux would give them all the stuff they use a
computer for ( most people only really browse and word process on the
darned things)
We are not talking about most people. I have been accused of having
too many computers, by hypocrites here who have more than one
computer. Among other things I use computers for video which ideally
requires very fast processors and plenty of HD storage. As a
compromise I network three older computers instead of buying one new
one.
You might realise that most of the CGI special effects in todays movies
are in fact done on machines running Linux.

Look this up yourself. Try Weta Digital's website amongst many others.

Some interesting quotes for you from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Weta_Digital

Since November 2003, Weta Digital's Supercomputers have been listed on every Top500 list of the fastest computers in the world (Weta sometimes appearing as many as 4 times on a single list. Weta's Supercomputers are IBM BladeCenter clusters, each blade server with 2 Xeon CPUs and most of them running Linux. They are housed at the New Zealand Supercomputing Centre in central Wellington

Wikipedia also says that 75% of the computers on the list above run Linux
