You can't avoid bringing German autobahns into it if you're talking
about a Europe-wide limit. Standardised limits would mean removing the
ability of national governments to set them which wouldn't go down
very well with a lot of voters. And you also have the problem of
coming up with uniform limits on road systems that are not uniformly
designed - let alone the fact that limits in km/h don't translate to
nice round numbers in mph.

<Sigh> Why do we choose this as Saturday relaxation? :)

A quick search a Wikipedia tells us that few European members have speed
limits exceeding 80mph. Only exceptions I can see are German Autobahns,
obviously, and Italian Expressways where 95mph is permitted.

Surely a European policy on this should be considered, harmonisation,
greater European integratrion, drone, drone, drone..........

Yeah, I know where you're coming from, but if Brussels is so keen to stick
its oar into our affairs all the time???

But why should the penalty for disabling the governor be any greater
than the penalty for exceeding the speed limit, given that the sole
purpose of the governor is to prevent people exceeding the speed
limit? If speeding really is that bad, then increase the penalty for
it. If it isn't, then why bother with enforced technological
solutions?

If you have a vehicle which has been fitted with a governing device which
would be a legal requirement for safety reasons, knowingly disable that
device and go racing down the M62 then would be guilty of flagrant disregard
for the law.

I could always fan the flames of the debate a little and tie in my last
thread by saying let's have a 55mph speed limit - cut fuel consumption and
emissions at a stroke.
