I happened to be browsing about and ended up on the wikipedia page for
Oyster Cards.
For those who are paranoid about being "tracked" by Oyster please don't
bother to look - you'll only end up hiding under the bed forever ;-)
I'm sure the paranoia tendency won't like it, but this sort of statistical
thing can happen anyway - ie it doesn't actually need the cards to be
registered at all?
I've always assumed that once PAYG is live on NR, actual journey metrics
will almost certainly feed into the revenue allocation process.
You may well be right that it will play a role in time. The crucial
issue will be reliability of validation and take up. I don't believe
TfL use their data in a statistically robust way yet for any form of
revenue allocation - be it for Travelcard, bus passes or concessionary
travel (Freedom Pass only).

It may indicate poor siting of readers, for example if it generally
takes longer to head north from Deptford Bridge than from Lewisham on
the DLR ...
At a flat station, I would never touch till I'd seen a DLR train in
the platform and read what was on the train, rather than platform,
display. This isn't an option at all stations.
