Here's the symptoms I described on another forum (where somebodyModern telephones only need 2 wires. Older systems used 3 (one for the bell). Its a good idea to keep the polarity the same as you find it, but you should be able to connect / reconnect wires without causing too many problems. The problem sounds like low insulation. This can trip the incoming ringing whilst still allowing noisy outgoing calls and some internet service at reduced speed. There may be damp or condensation in an internal terminal box or a damaged cable. Unplug all the phones and DSL filters, disconnect the external wires and use a multimeter set to the highest resistance scale and test the resistance between the internal wires and each wire to earth. The resistance should be infinite i.e. no reading.
suggested I try here).
I have an incoming Telefonica landline ....
The story:
" Briefly - although it's complicated - phones working okay (incoming/
outgoing calls). Then, noticed phone was only ringing once - able to
get call. But the caller doesn't hear dialling but just white noise!
Outgoing calls still working. I unplugged the phone and tried
dialling the phone number from a mobile - just white noise then
message that line is busy. Replugged the phone - result: no incoming
or outgoing calls. Tried multiple phones - no effect.
Telefonica technician arrived - checked incoming line - all OK.
''Fault is internal - that's 50 euros to you gov, I'm off ... Get an
electrician to fix it!''.
Throughout all this the ADSL service on the same internal line is
working without problems ?
Anybody got any ideas before I have to call in an internal phone
technician and he sets about wire fiddling and charging me a fortune?
ps: as far as I can tell there are only two wires which connect to the
actual wall jack ... can that be possible? I'm reluctant to
dismantle the entire wall jack in case I disconnect something which I
can't fix myself. "
Anybody recognise the problem/symptoms?
Thanks
