The identifier serial numbers on the box are as follows

interior : 1036886

box number : 96AAD

The next test to be conducted is to disconnect all of the above
four hard wire connections and just to try the BT Paragon 500
on the plug and socket downstairs extension line which is connected
via a plug to the master socket socket.

Are you correct in saying the extension wire is connected to "Screw"
terminals? If so, you don't have a standard NTE5, and I'm suprised you
have one with the split faceplate. If so my previous recommendation
still applies. It's always a good idea to get ALL the facts before
asking here, and consider posting photos on a suitable site. All you've
done is not only confused yourself, but also all those trying to help.
There's no wonder Openreach charge what they do for just getting back to
a known state... My advice now is to replace all the currently intalled
flat phone, or alarm installation cables that have been used and do the
whole installation properly, using twisted pair phone cables

Normally, all the wires to slaves would be disconnected when you remove
the lower half of the master socket faceplate, since this has a plug
that goes into the test socket, which is normally hidden behind the
removeable part. The extension wires should be wired to the back of the
removeable part, if it was installed 4 years (or so) ago :-), using
Insulation Displacement Connectors (IDC). These don't work properly
with stranded wire. Also I trust the insulation wasn't stripped back?
The connector is designed to cut into the insulation, hence why they're
called IDCs...

Remove the faceplate which should disconnect all the extensions. Plug
the Paragon into the test socket. It should work fine. Repeat with all
the other phones in the house. Note any that don't work properly - they
need replacing.

When you're (re)wiring the slave sockets you'll have to fit a
replacement faceplate ADSL filter when Broadband is installed, since the
current extension cables used are unlikely to be twisted pair, given the
colour-code you've found. If the extension wire is stranded rather than
solid, then you'll have problems with the IDCs on the master faceplate.

As I've said, "Do it right, do it once".
