My business has premises in 2 nearly adjacent buildings on the same street. An anlogue line surfaces in building A and this is where the master socket is. A 200' extension runs from there to building B. The reasons it is like this are historical. This arrangement has worked fine for years, however now we are starting to have problems, which I assume to be due to the extension degrading. It probably wasn't a good idea to use solid core cable for an long elevated cable!

I would like to get the exchange line moved to building B, this would make the long extension redunandant and hopefully cure the problems. If not, they would at least be more easily traceable.

The problem is that when I talk to the BT sales office, all they can offer is a cease and reprovide. This would be a disaster for me - as my broadband is on this line, it would inavoidably mean terminating the contract with my ISP and having to have a new contract. The 1 week without broadband would be catastrophic for my business, but worse than that we run a mail server over this conenction; additionally there are static IP addresses associated with the ISP contract, so ceasing the line REALLY is a non - starter. I need a solution that does not involve ceasing the line.

As I said, the 2 premises are adjacent, and belong to the same landlord. There are definitely lots of unused lines coming into buildign B. While I haven't seen it with my own eyes, due to the layout of the buildings I would think it EXTREMELY likely that the phone lines from building A and building B run back to the same street cabinet.

So all I need done is for a BT bloke to identify a spare pair going to building B, and to shift the jumper in the cabinet to connect that pair to my current exchange line. Job done, simple.

But the sales office don't understand that.

How can I get BT to do what I want??

Thanks for any help

Thanks for the answers, chaps.

It seems that BT are unable to do what I want because the buildings are separate. The regulatory framework apparently ptohibits them from this. Madness!

So there is a way round it but is soooo much trouble.....
order new line in building B
get incoming phone calls diverted from old line to new line
get ISP to provide broadband on new line
get ISP to shift static IPs from old to new account. I will need them to tell me before and after this happens so I can -
move my broadband router from old line to new line
get BT to cease the old line
get BT to transfer the number from the old line to the new line, not breaking broadband in the process

Well at least there is a way round, but I don't like it, it is so much trouble and bound to go badly wriong at some point. I'll see how long I can struggle on with the current setup......

My news-server doesn't have the original or follow-ups, but do you have
any sort of Internet connectivity between the buildings? (ie. Ethernet,
cat-5)?

Actually there are 3 x CAT5 cables following the same route. One with the analogue ine in question, with with 4 analogue phone extensions, and one with computer network. Yes, they are all done with solid CAT5 cable, not a good idea for an elevated cable flapping around in the wind, which I am sure is the problem. So I could replace the cable (as per earlier post today) but that is a lot of trouble and a more elegant solution is to make the BT master socket actually emerge in the correct building!
