99.9% of such people are prefectly capable of fitting the proper
connector onto the lead...
I was referring to cheap and nasty RJ-45 sockets, not cheap and nasty RJ-11 plugs. Some of the cheaper sockets don't have either the clearance for the spring contacts to move out of the way and/or use cheap material that bends too easily if deflected further than it would be if an RJ-45 is inserted.
*have* seen damaged RJ45 sockets from exactly this but they were very
cheap and nasty ones.
The last one I saw damaged in such a way involved an *expensive* and
nasty RJ11 lead.
