Can someone tell me the correct way to extend my home phone wiring
for phone in other rooms around the house in a way which does not
mess-up my ADSL broadband connection?

I ask this as we have just signed up for the Virgin media ADSL
service but have found it will only work well if all the house
extensions are disconnected from the master socket!

All the extensions are wired correctly (BT did the work some years
ago) with the bell signal only coming from pin 3 in master socket
and supplied micro filters fitted to the phones & ADSL modem.

I have found with the phones unplug and just the wiring to the
extension socked will cause the broadband service to grind to a
holt and complain about no dial tone sometimes, but will sometimes
connect with a slow connection around 1/2 MB. With the extension
wiring disconnected I get good service between 4 to 6 MB.

PS all slave socket are the correct non master type and there is
nothing else connected except the extension wire and sockets!

Any ideas?

John

Hard wired extension bell still attached? (not compatable)

Burglar alarm attached? (requires a specialist filter, fitted as close
to the NTE as possible)

Sky digi box attached? (requires filter)

You stated the BT had wired all your extensions, there isn't any
supplementary flat extension wiring is there? (causes extra loss &
introduces extra noise onto the line)

Have you tried removing the bell wire from pin 3 (don't worry if all
your tele equipment is properly filtered they will still ring)?

Just a few things to get your juices running

If disconnecting the bell wire doesn't solve the problem, the safest
solution is to replace the faceplate in the master socket with a filtered
one such as the "ADSL-NTEFACE NEW DESIGN" shown here:
http://www.solwise.co.uk/adsl_splitters.htm

Any analog extension wiring connected into the back of that will then
automatically be filtered without needing any additional plug-in filters. If
your ADSL modem needs to be somewhere which is not local to the master
socket, you'll need an additional *unfiltered* extension for that. The
faceplate provides connection points for unfiltered as well as filtered
extensions on the back. This solution isolates your ADSL signal from your
phone wiring as early as possible, and prevents any analog equipment from
interfering with the signal.
