Now you're being silly. All I and many others want is for all
numbers
to
be charged at the same (normal) rate and not inflated just for
the
convenience and/or profit of the number owner.
So you want to kill off services such as fax to email, dial-up
internet,
information services (weather forecasts, cricket scores) which are
currently
financed by revenue sharing. Brilliant.
Fax to email can be paid for by the recipient. It is, after all, for
their
benefit. Why should the caller pay for your convenience..?
Nonsense on stilts. My fax to email number is for the SENDER'S
convenience, not
mine. The sender can use email or snailmail, for neither of which is
the
recipient expected to pay.
Not at all. If you have a fax number at all, it's because you want
people
to send you faxes.
Rubbish. It's because people have asked to be able to send things to me
by fax,
as more convenient than scanning and sending by email.
Right, so customers have asked you for a fax facility, yes..? So in order
to serve your customers, you cause them to spend more money than they
otherwise would.
If you are prepared to pay for junk faxes, or junk snailmail with
insufficient
postage for that matter, that's your affair but don't expect me to
follow suit.
I don't. You can have email to fax on a geographic number. Just pass the
costs on to your customers as part of the cost of the service. Don't make
them pay an exorbitant phone call cost.
[repeated stuff snip]
Not at all. Geographic numbers were used for these services before the
advent of 0870, they can be again. In any case, nobody is forcing
anybody
to provide any services at all. They do it to make money, all I'm
saying
is that money should not be made by means of a phone call.
By "making money" you mean charging for a service. So what do you
suggest then
- ringing up, and a voicemail dalek asking you to punch in your credit
card
details before you get the information ?
No, I suggest a normal number. Paid for by the person providing the
service. They can recoup that cost by means other than a premium phone
call.
[more repeated stuff snipped]
No, your argument is like saying there shouldn't be rail travel,
because
bus
fares are cheaper.
It's nothing of the sort. If you choose to travel by train, that's one
thing. But leave me the choice of travelling by bus. Your argument
would
remove the buses.
It's you who want to restrict choice, not me.
I don't want to restrict choice at all. You want to pay through the nose
for phone calls, go right ahead. But to quote you from an earlier message,
don't expect me to follow suit.
A piece of advice: when in a hole, stop digging.
But I'm not in a hole. Nor did I ask you for advice.
