And regardless of the rules and remedies, DD effectively gives them thethat's a daft statement, the rules and remedies are the protections in
ability to deduct any sum they like from your account.

The rules are there, but they don't actually PREVENT a payment being taken
without notice.
All the rules do is give you an opportunity to argue with stupid bank staff
for half a day to get them to honour the DD guarantee when it goes wrong.
