I have yet to hear any concrete reason why I shouldn't use a USB

USB modems do not work. That is the salient point I take from this.

Its not FUD, thats M$'s dept. Most of us on here are speaking from
experience, USB modems can be a pita and sometimes they DON'T work even
under windows. Why do you think ISP's give them away ?

But as I have pointed out elsewhere in this thread, the router
recommended by Zen (Speedtouch 536) is equipped with a USB port and an
Ethernet port. So if I use that product's USB port to connect (given
that the network card, which I don't use, is the type that has a BNC
connector), how is that different from using a USB modem? Sorry, I'm
not being obtuse - I simply do not understand WHY people are making so
much fuss about USB ADSL modems when nowadays USB is used for
EVERYthing! Scanners, external drives, modems... USB is ubiquitous,
yet I am being told that for ADSL it's crap. Apparently it's a good
idea to use a router and connect it via USB (as per the Speedtouch 536
product spec), but NOT a good idea to use an ADSL USB modem! I keep
coming back to the same question: WHY do I need a router if I have
nothing to route?

Re your comment "sometimes they DON'T work even under windows", surely
USB modems must generally work, else the companies selling them would
rapidly cease trading. If there was a general failure, we'd pretty
soon hear about it in the press, or in Computer Weekly, or in the
Guardian IT section, or on one of the many consumer programmes on TV
or radio. If SOME installations on Windows fail, well, that is down to
the individual installation, isn't it? There are dozens of bits of
hard- and software that can present problems with their installations
in some cases. This is why there are so many help desks in operation.
