Re: Bt cant transfer number - any advice?

Odd... before Metronet was bought by Plus.Net they had notes to the
effect that a "change of phone number" would likely cause ADSL service
to be ceased, resulting in admin costs (69.95!) for a new "activation"
on the line. Since the PN buyout, website has been altered (half the
accounts have been remove from new sale, among other so-called
"imporovements") so I doubt such info will still be visible, but if it
were still the case it would directly contradict your comment... But
i have also, more recently,, seen comments that a number change
no longer causes a "cease", again this is contrary to your comment.
I'm not in a position to wish to experiment (!) right now, but clearly
not all of these conflicting suggestions will be correct.

ISTR horror stories in uk.telecom.broadband regarding ADSL services
that are still present as far as BT are concerned on a particular line,
sometimes after the ISP has cancelled the service from their end, but
the line is still connected to a DSLAM (?) at the exchange, and still
registered with that original ISP ?

Yes - happened to me, for a 3 month period when I had cancelled
ADSL from Freeserve (start of November 2003) and did not get the
line onto the desired ISP before mid-February 2004. There had been
a "free setup" deal to mid-December (I got activation at half price,
in the end - I was switching from 500 kbps IPstream to 2000 kbps
DataStream, and 'migration' was not possible).

Freeserve cancelled the "FuturePay" arrangement in November,
and cancelled the login details in December, but BT Wholesale,
in mid-December, January, and even early February, confirmed
that the line was still in service for Freeserve (their CS staff, on
each call, confirmed my account was cancelled, and until the
final guy, that they *had* cancelled ADSL). Fortunately, he was
willing to check with BTW, and put in a (new?) "cease" order.
