There's straight and crossed cables. Straight cables are wired 1 - 1 and
crossed are wired in reverse.

You should be able to check which one you've got put inspecting the
connectors - that is if you can see the colours - or alternatively use a
continuity tester.

You may be able to establish which one you need from the manufacturer of the
modem, or alternatively just trial and error.
