Croatia is in Europe. Though just not yet in the EU.
However when we came back from there last year as it was a charter
flight and it was known we were all UK/EU passport holders getting
on the flight there was no customs to go through, it was straight
off the airplane and out to collect bags and out the airport - made
no difference if you walked through the EU citizen channel or the
other citizens nothing to declare or to declare as there was no one
there. Virgin Mobile is 60p/min making a call and 30p/min receiving a
call.
(Using their PAYG tariff set-up for Direct Debit).
Three charge £1.40/min making a call and 90p/min receiving a call.
PAYG. You could just forget about the mobile for the time you are there.
You could use Vyke, and a local phone box (as long as it accepts
incoming calls) and use your mobile to text the required details to
initiated the call, for example call UK landline @ local phonebox. This
would be 4.18p/min + the cost of the SMS to start the callback. This is
what
I did whilst away in the Czech Republic recently.
You could try and find somewhere that sells a local SIM, but is it
worth it for the short time you are there? You could just ensure
all diverts to voicemail are cancelled before you go away and then
switch the phone off most the time, just check now and then for a
text and use Vyke to make calls and chill out whilst away.
I rang Tmobile who said Croatia wasn't in the europe band, it was
band 3 or something, even my travel insurance wouldnt cover me unless
i went worldwide, i was well gutted, I will look into Virgin, I do
have a Sim card somewhere.

I have annual European Travel Insurance with:
http://www.travelinsuranceweb.com Croatia is covered under Europe (as it's
in Europe).
I think what T-Mobile mean is it's not on the lower EU tariff they've
added it to another (higher) band to make up revenue they think they have
lost by the lower EU countries. Don't know why your insurance doesn't
cover it as being in Europe, very strange.

I have checked my Insurance again and phoned them, they have told me i would
have been ok on the European Insurance afterall and were very sorry for the
misleading info, Anyway they are sending me a £20 voucher for Argos out. By
the way when you were in Croatia, was it better to get the currency there,
or before, at the moment Travelex are 10.36, (asking this as i went to Ibiza
and the rate was worse there than it was in the Uk.)
