Alan J Robertson secured a place in history by writing:
It would be a bit pricey but have you considered the T-Mobile SIM only
deal? This costs ?7.50/month, includes 50 anytime xnet minutes but
crucially has a minimum term of just a month. You could then at the WnW
Pro Bundle at ?9.99 a month to this to get 2Gb/month 3G laptop access.
Appreciate the lateral thinking - although it doesn't look to me like you
can add WnW to a SIM only contract, only the Business-1 plan. But I'm
beginning to be resigned to a provider recognising that there is
residential demand for laptop 3G on a sensibly priced basis and offering
it. I suspect the demand won't appear until the pricing reflects other
broadband provision in the domestic arena though: Most domestic users will
have access to broadband via other means the vast majority of the time and
are probably paying around £20pm for near unlimited download. I personally
would baulk at anything much above £3 a day for 3G - my usage isn't
'essential' like a business users is and, if I really need it, I'll go and
find a hotspot, which are all over the place already. At worst, I'll plug
into a phone line.
I'm happy to pay for PC card etc myself, so it seems to me the cost of
provision is near zero for the provider - some billing admin and a bit of
data transfer - so there clearly is a model and some level of demand which
would provide easy profit to the first who gets the pricing right. But I
suspect, given the need to wring every last penny out of early adopters,
that it won't happen soon. If anyone knows different, please shout now :-)
