Is this really the case? If you want to keep your number, you have to
upgrade your phone directly with the mobile company (and get much
poorer deals than if you could upgrade with somewhere like
onestopphoneshop)?
Basically, yes.
If you want to upgrade and keep number, expect no cashback deals, and
usually a higher price for the handset than for new customers.
If you want the cheapest deal - get a new contract and don't cancel old
one. Request your PAC for your old one and then migrate your number to
another network's PAYG service. Then after a few days, request your PAC
from the PAYG service and port your number into your new contract.
Some networks won't allow you to port your number once the contract has
started, but certainly Orange and T-Mobile do.
Is it possible to modify the above suggestion slightly:
- get my existing o2 number ported onto a new Orange PAYG sim deal
- wait a few days
- then port the same number back to the new o2 contract deal I
originally wanted with whichever service provider I choose
???
Are there any hurdles in the way to stop this happening?
Seems daft to me to allow customers to transfer their number *between*
networks, but not allow it within networks, in order for the customer
to get the best deal every 12 months or so.
