You shouldn't of course. What you can do is challenge the company to
tell you how you subscribed to the service. Operators of such services
are required under data protection legislation to keep records of how
and when you subscribe.
How do they get away with it?
It's shameful, but quite difficult to stop in reality. There are
hundreds of companies who use shortcodes quite legitimately,
unfortunately as with everything in life the minority spoil it for the
majority.
It would be quite easy to ban such messages being sent without a request
being sent directly from the user- but that would cut into revenue. The
companies don't care about the user, but about profits.
Have you got evidence that it's the majority that use this responsibly?
