Help, please: basic internet/email access using laptop and mobile phone or card-phone??

Can someone help me to gain basic email and internet functionality when away from home with the laptop and without access to a landline?
In the past I have used a Nokia 8110 with a serial cable that incorporated a software modem, and the Nokia Datasuite 2, and this was fine, but only worked on Win 95.
Since then I have used a Ubinetics wireless PCMCIA card phone with a Voda sim, and this was OK, and worked with Win 98 and 2000, but does not work with XP.
Now my new laptop has win XP and I have to change again. I don't need anything fancy: just something that allows me to dialup to my Demon account and send/receive emails to/from the laptop by POP3. Internet browsing would be nice but not essential. My present mobile phone is a Nokia 3310 with a Voda PAYG sim. My laptop does not have infra-red though I guess I could buy a USB infra-red thingy.
I would be willing to swap to a different mobile phone, or buy a wireless card phone or whatever, but my usage is sporadic: just a few weeks a year during which I need to check emails a couple of times a day. Maybe in the region of 30 emails a day on these occasions. My mobile phone is, similarly, just for emergencies and occasional weeks away, so a PAYG sim is best for me. I have a strong preference for retaining the laptop and my existing emailing programme (Turnpike) and mail database as part of the solution if possible. Some sort of wireless modem with Voda PAYG sim that facilitated ordinary dial-up from the laptop would be ideal.
Not very technically minded, I'm afraid, so not really clear about GSM/GPRS/3G etc. etc., or even what can be done with a mobile phone these days, but willing to be advised!
Thanks in anticipation.
Gill
