Are there any competitors using the FTTC service,

Yes:-
BUT AFAIK all of them will end up with a BT modem in your house.
The router is free choice, the modem is not.
Indeed, but does it really matter that BT supply the modem, it's only a
case of them extending their active equipment into your home ?
You still have a free choice of router (with BT or any other ISP) and that
still controls all the the user definable properties of the connection.
NAT routing, firewall, port forwards etc etc .
With ADSL, there are sometimes reliability problems. Almost always these
problems are caused by bad joints in the BT cable between your property and
the exchange. A good router will report line information that you can feed
back you your ISP, and a good ISP can use that information to maintain
pressure on BT until Openreach actually resolves the problem - this may take
months, of course!
With FTTC the end user cannot interrogate the VDSL modem for such
information. I've no idea whether BT can measure the line performance from
the exchange end. Even if they can, it seems unlikely that they will make
this information available to the end user or to his ISP, so there will be
no way to apply pressure to BT to resolve unreliability issues.
The copper cables used for FTTC are the same cables as are used for the
voice service (and in other circumstances for ADSL) - the only effective
difference is that the distance to the street cabinet is shorter than to the
exchange - so they are equally likely to suffer from bad joints and
interference.
