Can anyone recommend a relatively inexpensive wireless modem/router, but one that has a fairly strong wireless signal?

What you need is a router that supports 802.11n e.g Netgear DGN2000
http://www.netgear.co.uk/dgn2000.php

You would also need n compatible adapters for you PCs etc.

802.11n offers a faster speed and greater range.
