We tried the computer using the Plusnet Broadband connection next

Then the network side of the PC appears to work.
So the problem is possibly the modem/router isn't configured
with username/password. Possible because modem/routers
don't usually lose their username/password, they withstand
power cycling, and only lose the details if you are foolish
enough to push a reset button.
It would be useful if you could get to the routers control
panel for which you need to know its IP address, which
needs its handbook, which I presume you haven't got?
It's a number like xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx
Can you get to a DOS box?
Start -> Programs -> Accessories -> Command Prompt
and in the box put cd\ followed by a return or enter
depends on what you call it. That's cd\ with the \
You should see C:\
If so type in
ipconfig /all
You should get a screenful of info
The lines you need are
IP address
Default gateway
Subnet mask
and the two DNS servers addresses
Post them here.
In the same DOS box type
ping and the Default gateway address including
the dots you got above.
You should get 3 lines of responses, do you?
If so put this address in your browser and
you should get to the routers control panel?
Do you, and if so are there any link statistics or
info?
If there is a WAN xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx address that
is like gold, you can look it up and find your ISP.
Ring them, quote you phone number and postcode,
and they should be able to identify you.
They should be able to give you your username
/password and DNS servers.
Tell us your make/model of modem/router,
what screens/tabs/selections are available
and we should be able to, in conjunction with
ipconfig /all, tell you how to configure it.
We shall at least know that the PC is talking
to the router, it's wire connected, not a wireless
connection ?????
If so it may be the wireless connection is
knackered. And you are into setting up
wireless security/authentication, or putting
in a wired connection to get it working, leaving
the wireless side to later.
