So what gives? What's the real answer here?

For what it's worth I've found that a DMT capable
modem helps a lot. You can set your target SNR and
your BRAS profile should follow. If there are any errors
at all then your profile tends to be stuck, lower your
target SNR with DMT and your speed jumps, it
will however fall again if you set the target SNR to
too low a value, or try to change it too often.
But used with caution DMT tool will get you a better
speed and profile than sitting back and waiting for
something to happen.
I've used an ADSL only modem with long line flash,
two DMT capable modems, and the highly recommended
2 wire. The DMT capable gave the best sustainable
speeds.
