Generally, I'd hope for an speed increase
as ye are getting rid of something that adds a load onto the host
system's CPU and the operating systems USB host sub-system. But your
experience of going more than double the speed kind of points towards
something else - maybe an ADSL signalling mode not supported by the
older device, or some horrendous signal-to-noise issue on your line -
maybe the particular filter or modem wasn't man enough...


Possibly. But don't you think that the same might also apply to other people
with USB modems as well?
