My daughter has a home hub and the security code (which is a WEP code) was
printed on the hub itself I believe. Your wireless connection on the
laptop needs to be set to use DHCP (automatically obtain an IP address).
You should get some indication of it attempting to connect - you may need
to double click the icon in the system tray to be able to enter the WEP
code, I don't use Vista so can't be more specific.
Some vista machines have difficulty with dhcp....
Or, as I found out with help from this group, some routers have problems with the way Vista now implements DHCP. Vista isn't at fault as such, it just does DHCP differently to XP etc.
ISTR There is a way to fix this by hacking with a flint axe in the registry. Check the MSKB.
One thing I can say from bitter experience is that Vista has major problems with WPA-PSK (TKIP) encryption and this is acknowledged by Microsoft. I have had to buy a new router as my Vista laptop's built in
That is being overly generous. The closest I would put it is "not denied" by Microsoft. My old 3Com router will not work with Vista portables using the Intel 3945 drivers using WPA-PSK (TKIP). It seems to be a bad combination - you can find plenty of other examples of failing WPA with Vista, but precious few useful suggestions apart from buy a new router.
For the record it works OK with WPA2 but the old router doesn't support it. And it works OK for unsecured or WEP (not very secure) too.
WiFi would not connect to my Conexant router using WPA-PSK (TKIP) although XP machines have no problems. My new Netgear DG834G works perfectly with Vista using WPA2-PSK (AES).
TKIP seems to be horribly broken in Vista at least in combination with some models of router. It typically fails with timeout exchanging secondary keys here. Here is a thread on ms.public.windows.vista.networking_sharing called "Wireless WPA-PSK".
http://groups.google.com/group/microsoft.public.windows.vista.networking_
sharing/browse_frm/thread/f681d5ded161ca3d/27eff67e983fd417?lnk=gst&q=WPA
-PSK+Intel+toshiba#27eff67e983fd417
Plenty of other tales of WPA woe scattered around. It would be nice to have a list of those combinations that are known to fail (or perhaps a much shorter list of the routers known to work with WPA-PSK /TKIP and Vista).
