Users have to control their computers, not let their computers run them. If they do, when it goes wrong it can be exspensive to the n'th degree, then they moan & wail because it cost them money for someone to visit & fix what they could have done. They can't have that luxury unless they do know the basics.
If you were recommending that users set up static IP addresses for the computers on their networks, how would you suggest that they did it? Set each PC's TCP to a static address and give all the PCs hosts and lmhosts files which list all the addresses/hostnames on the network? Or use the router's Address Reservation of the DHCP server (assuming the router has this feature) to force DHCP to allocate the same address to a given PC permanently rather than just until a router reboot?
If you go for the first approach, will you have problems because there's no DNS server on the network (unlike the second approach where the router's DHCP server also does DNS name-address translation)?
How many routers have DNS servers? Safecom, Netgear and Zyxel all provide a DNS proxy, which just passes requests to the ISP DNS and passes responses to the computer. There is no DNS updating when an address is issued by the router.
