This evening I am going to a friends house to see if we can sort
a problem
with his home network and I wondered if anyone had any thoughts
on what might be the cause of the problem.

His set up is an NTL (Virgin?) cable system. The standard NTL
cable modem
feeds the US Robotics router via an Ethernet cable. There are
then two computers A and B plugged into the router, again by
Ethernet cable. If only one computer is on, it connects
perfectly well to the internet, but if
both computers are on they freeze when attempting to access the
internet.

Can the computers access each other ?

They have never tried that. I will see if I can get them talking
tonight. Digby's suggestion is a possibility because I know he did
have it disconnected at one point.

I will see how it transpires.

I am now using one of the PCs in question. We can get them both
up and running on the internet and they perform perfectly but, if
either machine is turned off it will not connect to the internet
again until the router is rebooted. The router is a US Robotics
model USR8004. I cannot fathom any reason for the way this is
working. Any suggestions please?

Check to see if NAT has been disabled or turned off......as it appears
that the router is 'invisible' to the cable modem so it is allocating
the one IP to the first PC which is turned on. Ideally it should be
turned on & it may make it simpler if DHCP is turned on, in the
router.

Well it's either that or you may be trying to use an ADSL router,
wouldn't be the first time, or the last....
