Of course, you can get about 15 seconds of "quiet line" just by keying a
single digit (as that will stop the dialtone). It might be easier to give
out as your method for checking for noise, when discussing the fault, than
17070 (that also ties up test kit which the engineers use, and it is thus
a good reason for avoiding 'mis'use - staff might not be happy - in the
dim and distant past, 17070 was being used to determine line length to
see whether people might get ADSL, and BT eventually took the test off
the menu).
