I am being pestered by Virgin Media to upgrade from an analogue service to a
digital service.

I am concerned that if I did upgrade I wouldn't be able to -
set the video timer to record programmes whilst I am out
view one channel whilst recording from another
Am I right in being concerned

No. Switching to a digital service will not change your ability to do
any of those things.
