What about all the people who now access usenet via
google, i.e. via a web page?

I can access my email via a web page, that doesn't make my email inbox a
website.

Quite. Nor is a "forum" a website. Its a database of stuff which is
*accessed* through a web frontend.

The technical difference between usenet-based and website-based
discussion groups is the protocol or protocols through they are
accessed. Historically, the latter were once called BBS while the
former were called newsgroups. The distinction has been blurred and
essentially removed since many fora are now also available as
newsgroups, and vice versa.

This is of course the stupidest discussion ever, sparked by me
pointing out that Gonz the Illiterate was trying to be a smartarse
(again).
