Re: Would Low Wireless Signal Affect Internet Speed?

[snip cars analogy]

If you're connected at 11Mb/s to your router but every other packet is
too scrambled to decode, the *actual* throughput drops to 5.5Mb/s or
lower. It doesn't take much interference to drop a seemingly good
connection down to below-ADSL speeds. Intermittent interference is an
especial problem, as that can cause a system that *thinks* it can
connect at 54Mb/s to run a large download at a fraction of that speed.

You can of course estimate the throughput of your wireless connection.

Connect a computer by wire to the network (i.e. the ports on the router).
Connect a second computer also by wire.

Find a single very large file - several tens of megabytes. Copy that file
from one computer to the other, timing it with a stopwatch. You can create
a script which will show the start & fnish time, and pre-delete the copy so
that you can check for repeatability. For a wired network at 100Mbits/sec
the limiting factor will probably be the disk system - the net throughput
might well be only 20 Mbits/sec if one of the computers is a laptop. Out of
interest, repeat the test with a folder containing many small files, and see
how the filesystem overhead slows the overall performance.

Now repeat the test with one of the computers using the wireless link.
