Hiya
Having problems connecting a 3COM wireless access point (3CRWE454G72) to a Webstar EPC2100R2 telewest cable modem, it looks like the cable modem is
not assigning an IP. The WLAN led on the 3COM flashes continually, the wireless laptop sees a good signal.
I have tested the 3COM on my Origo router and Pipex connection , the wireless connection establishes within seconds. and the router sets the IP just as quick.
Can I connect a WAP direct to a Webstar , do I need a different cable Xover/straight through , do I have to connect to the Webstar and alter the configuration ?
I'm a bit baffled by your question as looking on the 3Com website for this model suggests it is purely a Wireless base station and not a router.Details here http://tinyurl.com/23hv2d
Your post refers to a WLAN port but looking at the manual suggests that this is to indicate that the wireless LAN is operational not a WAN port port. Manual here http://tinyurl.com/ytmqou
The answer would appear to be that you cannot connect the device directly to the modem as it is not capable of being assigned a WAN IP address.
I'm further confused as you seem to have both a ADSL connection and a Cable Modem connection.
Bottom line would appear to be that you could use your 3COM as an access point onto your existing network but you need a router (with WAN/LAN ports) to use as the bridge between Telewest's network and yours.
Not a complete answer ... but then again we dont have full information.

ps is your Origo acting as a DHCP server as you dont mention configuring IP addresses on the 3COM?
