A lot of things are changing in the exchanges, and 21CN
will
turn
everything upsidedown again.
That can only be a good thing. It needs to be software driven,
no
physical wiring/jumpering.
That makes switching suppliers and equipment quicker. Bet even
when
they have this facility, it will be blocked out by bull***
procedures!
Doesn't matter how far the hardware or software goes, there is
nothing which is as flexible as running a metallic jumper from
one
port to another, want red care you just run another jumper, you
want
ADSL, then you just change the jumper path.
Thinking about it, personally, I agree. However it's time
consuming
and I wonder for how many jumpers run a frame fault comes out?
If the system was automated I can imagine some jerk sat in some
specially created switch mangement frame control telling you that
only frames staff were allowed to request new exchange routes.
Also,
it robs the Poles of work ;-)
If there was a way then BT would already be using it as it would
save
them on manpower costs alone.
There is much of that to come in the 21CN so they say.
(never heard them called hostals but it's the same thing)
They all have signs on doors saying 'OLO HOSTAL' round here, but
it
does depend where you are. They were also called that in BT Today.
A
'suite' refers to the rack of equipment in BT (switch not field)
talk. You know the things, Kilostream Suite, Copper Wideband
Serving
Section (CWSS) Suite and the like. The switch guys are fussy about
that ;-)
lol
Tell me about it, the first job I had in the central exchange was
to
provide a line to a suite...I spent most the time on site looking
for
a group of offices as no one gave me any more information
I like it when they refer to you as an FMJ. Simular thing, putting a
line into the switch guys office and one refered to me as an FMJ.
I said ''What that then''
He said 'Field Maintenance Jointer'.
I said, ''Better put your own line in then, I shouldn't even be
inside here'' and left.
Thinking I had the last laugh I went back a bit later, whereupon he
refused me access telling me it was a CA guys job.
I told him I was multiskilled, but he just would not have it. If
only
every customer was like that!!!!!!!!!
Life was so much simpler in the old days & dare I say it....I got more
work done as well when I only wore one hat instead of the multitude of
bonnets I have to wear today. You could get yourself into a frame of
mind & things would just get done. Nowadays you can be up to your
knees in muck & bullets one moment & then have to fix a ADSL fault in
some plush office the next. The endusers are not amused but what the
hell, the boss says do it so you do, just a little bit slower as you
have to keep changing your perspective all the time.
As long as it keeps paying the mortgage that's all you worry about
now, knowing full well that sometime in the very near future you're
going to get a job done by a contractor (who get's more money than
you) who's dropped the ball, such as cross pairing in a joint, split
pairing or forgetting to even crimp a pair or even running 2X20pr
armoured cables into a sleeve 30 without stripping the armouring so
you have to do the whole blasted thing over again & the next time &
the next etc....
Sorry but contractors are the bain of our lives in this patch...
