Do BTW still offer fixed speed rates to ISPs, i.e. 512k, 1, and 2 Meg,

Yes.

or do any new connections, or upgrades have to be on the 'ADSLMax up to
8Meg' system ?

In other words can I request an upgrade from my present 512k service to
one that *syncs* at 1 Meg (and no higher) ?

Not all lines handle 1 Meg AIUI.

Ah, so the <60dB attenuation limit still applies ? despite the BTW Max
checker telling me that my line would probably support 1.5 Mb/s on
ADSLMax. So in short I'm still trapped at 512k unless I want to live
'on the cliff edge' with ADSL Max ?

(My SNR is 19dB, 1 Meg would give me an SNR of 13dB, which I'd find
comfortable, ADSLMax would give me 6dB albeit at 2 Megs, but I don't
want to risk that instability)

Your figures are similar to mine. 1 Meg service with:
Safecom router: attenuation - 63.9dB, SNR 11 to 13dB (18dB at 512k)
Zyxel router: attenuation - 61dB, noise margin 13 to 17dB

The Safecom logged CRC errors on a regular basis (with no apparent
degradation), but the Zyxel reports no errors (both over a couple of
hours). The Safecom also ran with without problems though with increased
errors at 6dB SNR.

HTH

It does, thank you; almost the same atten as me 63dB (Solwise SAR715).

How did you manage to get on a 1Meg coonection with >60dB atten ?
