Thanks for the suggestion, but I've already tried a Sagem USB modem
(forgot to mention this before). I even attempted to use a BT voyager
ADSL router, but it won't let you use a xxx@xxxxxxxxxxxxx username.

All modems I've tried work fine on other lines.

Do you know how to interpret the router info pages ?

Just to provide a bit more info about the problem (which is still not
resolved):

With a US Robotics 9106 router the diagnostic page reads as follows for
usernames bt_test@startup_domain AND bt_test_user@startup_domain:

Test ADSL Synchronization: PASS
Test ATM OAM F5 segment ping: FAIL
Test ATM OAM F5 end-to-end ping: PASS

Test PPP server session: PASS
Test authentication with ISP: PASS
Test the assigned IP address: PASS
Ping default gateway: PASS
Ping primary domain name server: FAIL

When I attempt these user accounts with a BT Voyager 2901 router (which
has the same diagnostics page), everything on there is a PASS. I'm not
sure why a couple of tests fail with the USR router, but don't think
that's the issue here.

Now for the problem bit. Logging on with {...@xxxxxxxxxxxxx AND
bt_test_u...@xxxxxxxxxxxxx, the USR 9106 diagnostics comes up with the
following:

Test ADSL Synchronization: PASS
Test ATM OAM F5 segment ping: FAIL
Test ATM OAM F5 end-to-end ping: PASS

Test PPP server session: PASS
Test authentication with ISP: FAIL
Test the assigned IP address: N/A
Ping default gateway: N/A
Ping primary domain name server: N/A

The Voyager won't allow a ....@xxxxxxxxxxxxx username so I can't test
that!! I've even tried the crappy little Sagem modem that Tiscali sent
out. It gives a 691 error when trying to connect ("username/password is
invalid on the domain", or words to that effect).

We've been on to Tiscali tech support almost every day for the past 2
weeks, each time a fault is apparently logged with BT. A day or two
later a text message arrives saying that BT have fixed a problem on
your line, could you re-test. BUT IT STILL DOESN'T WORK!! Same errors
everytime. In total Tiscali have reported this fault 11 (eleven!) times
to BT.

Anyone know where we can go from here??

I've had issues also with a Tiscali LLU connection I was moved to by Plusnet.
They just seemed to be pushing the problem back and forth with zero effect.

So, I'm in the process of migrating ISP to one I reckon may be more competent.
That may be the only practical solution.
