I have been trying to sort out my failed attempts to publish web pages
to FrontPage fp server (note - FP). After 4 messages concerning this I
got some bright spark telling me that he had tried my ftp (note - FTP)
connection and he could find no problem.
As the fp and ftp connections are totally different it means that
either he doesn't understand what he is dealing with or didn't read
the information in front of him.
What is your problem with FP? Is it a total failure to connect, sync
local/remote and upload? Or does it work, but is VERY slow?
I had a problem about a fortnight ago for several days when each stage of
the normal FP "Publish Site" process took several minutes: it took about ten
minutes to connect to a small site (eg just a couple of pages!), prompt me
to logon, list local and remote files and determine that no files needed to
be uploaded - ie it was the peripheral activity which was slow, not the
actual file upload itself. The "publish" process did complete perfectly -
eventually.
F9 couldn't find any problem. They did wonder whether it might be related to
Norton Internet Security, though I confirmed that the problem did not go
away when I disabled NIS. Then they asked me to describe the problem all
over again, though I'd given detailed notes of the stages and timings in the
original ticket.
After several days when I didn't get chance to take things any further, I
tried again and found that FP was publishing very fast - faster than it had
ever done in the couple of years since I've been using it! Weird. Admittedly
my broadband line had been upgraded from 2 Mbps to 8 Mbps between raising
the ticket and finding that everything was working again, but I don't think
that would explain a difference between 5 seconds to "publish" no uploaded
files and 10 minutes to do the same ;-)
Either something changed on my PC without me making any conscious change or
else F9 fixed something. I wonder if at one stage they might have been
severely throttling my FP traffic?
I'd still recommend F9 to anyone who wanted broadband, email and web
hosting. At least their staff are British - F9/PlusNet haven't succumbed to
the trend to use Indina call centres who can only work off a script. I find
them MUCH easier to deal with than (for example) BT, Wanadoo or AOL. As an
IT consultant who fixes customers' PCs and internet problems, my heart
always sinks if I find that they are using BT, Wanadoo or AOL. One advantage
of F9 is that they have a proper call-logging system where my question and
their response are officially logged, and which is visible and accessible by
web interface without needing a long phone call to an Indian-accented
script-reader who doesn't give me confidence that they have understood my
question.
