Thanks to everyone for their assistance. I have finally managed to get
both PC and laptop up and running and managed to secure it too.
Just for anyone who's interested I connected my cable modem via
ethernet to the router, bought a USB - Ethernet adaptor and then
connected the router to the pc via the LAN connection on the router to
my new USB - Etherned device. Then after much playing managed to secure
the wireless network too.

1. Reboot the modem with just USB PC or ethernet router connected, each
time you want to switch from one to the other.
2. Get ethernet or wireless capability for your USB PC, and then connect
