Re: Broadband Wiring Problem

I have followed this thread with great interest for several reasons.

The primary one being the low speeds with which I connect to PLUSNET
412kb ON AVERAGE WITH 512 connection
I live 3.5 miles away from the Maidenhead exchange and can see it
from the house BUT the line wends it way 5.5miles by way of telegraph
poles
I PAID £70 TO Plus Net for connection last year BUT never got a visit
from BT
I am 81 and have lived in the house since it was built 51 years ago
the wiring is cotton braided and the extension (by Bt ) to an upper
lounge put in 40yr. ago is in what seems to be "ordinary steel" wire
from the Hall out along the outside of the house through the wall and
into the lounge

The connection boxes of which there are 3 "2 are small 3 x 1.5 inch
rectangular things" one of which is the spur off to the upper lounge
The "big" about 3"square box looks like nt5 so called but I am not
sure ?
Is wired from "the rear" and has the ADT burglar alarm fitted ,At the
last service I asked if this was legal and they said it was OK but did
not say it was legal just that it was OK

QUESTION D o you think that my wiring NEEDS attention if I am to
get 2MB Or any of the forth coming promised improvements? and if so
"free" or is it a case of your stuck with it unless you pay another
£70+ which I can ILL AFFORD ?

A further piece of info gleaned from the net is that if you have a
terminal or serious illness (I have recently got stage 3 cancer) you
can ring BT on150 ? and get help to test your system I tried this
and got a ring of roses sort of MERRY GO ROUND CIRCUIT getting
precisely nowhere

HELPFUL comment would be much appreciated

Presumably you original installation had phone(s) which were permanently
wired in, and it has subsequently been changed to modular sockets? When was
that done, and by whom?

Presumably your master socket is in the hall? Does it look like the one
here?

Removeable panel")

Where do you operate your ADSL equipment - is it plugged into the extension
socket in the lounge?

How do you know that your speed is 412kB? Is this as a result of running the
PlusNet speed test many times? At speed does the line synchronise? Dpending
on what equipment you are using (ADSL modem or router) you may be able to
display the statistics of the connection - attenuation, noise margin, error
rate, etc. Any such information would be useful to understand what's going
on.

If you *are* using the extension socket, is it possible to move your
equipment temporarily to the master socket to see whether that makes any
difference?

I'm afraid that you don't get an automatic visit from BT these days when
ADSL is installed - it is all done from the exchange end, and you are left
to sort out your own equipment. I don't know what the rules are concerning
extra support for cancer patients - but I wouldn't mind betting that that
only applies to the provision of a basic phone service - and doesn't cover
ADSL.

What you *really* need is for some knowledgeable person who lives near year
to come and have a look. I would gladly do it, but am too far away. Any
takers?
