How do the spammers get those e-mail addresses? They don't. They just churn through every possible combination of letters and numbers hoping

Not so simple. I run my own mail server, so get to see the full mail logs with delivery attempts and bounces. My own main address has over the past few weeks been the subject of an increasing amount of increasingly offensive material -- yet it's an address which is (a) never published on the net, and (b) never subscribed to email lists or given in response to web forms and the like (I create per-company addresses as needed). It is however used by my mua for outgoing mail.

I know full well I've never suffered a full-blown dictionary attack on my server; yet somehow my email address has 'leaked'. So there seem two possibilities -- someone has deliberately leaked it to a spammers list, or a machine holding it has been compromised and the address taken -- probably the more likely.

BTW is anyone else having major issues with spam from various "girls" from fairgamemail.us and vxcommit.com?
