Have you tried her number in any other ISP vailabilty checker, or with the
site www.samknows.com to see if there are problems there ? A while back,
people wanting to get ADSL service from Tesco.Net were given the same
response, and since Tesco.Net is run by NTL, and they use DataStream, it
was either that there was no DataStream connection for NTL from the exchange
in question, or there was some DatsStream link (but of insufficient capacity
to add additional customers without it affecting existing users too much).
So, there's a chance AOL might also be using DataStream. It allows the ISP to
more closely control the contention levels from each exchange, and may be one
reason for some low monthly fees (eg those of Tiscali) but with sometimes slow
speeds (*). Of course, I'm guessing, but if other ISPs can offer access then
it's something down to AOL, and another ISP may be a better option.
(*) But I know of at least two happy Tiscali customers in town - a friend's
mother-in-law, and his own parents, are each using Tiscali with no reported
problems, but then again, the users might not be running speed tests and for
just send/rx e-mail and a bit of browsing, they probably don't care much about
getting top speeds, but also, when I had a 1000 kbps connection, supplied to
my ISP by Tiscali and again, there were no noticeable speed problems, and I
feel sure I would have noticed, if there had been... I was certainly not
using my connection lightly at the time.
