Virgin state that they don't tie you into a 12 month contract. But if you read their T&Cs, they state
"... we do reserve the right to apply a £50 cancellation charge if your service is cancelled within 12 months of activation. " Surely this is a 12 month contract!
No, you can leave any time you like, you just have to pay them £50 to do so. If it were a 12 month contract, they would insist on you paying the rental every month for the full 12 months.
Don't get me wrong, I think it's sneaky as well, but it isn't a contract, it's a cancellation charge. And if what you say is correct then they do say they only reserve the right to charge, not that they *will* do so.
