Broadband and USB connection

My dad had ntl broadband installed yesterday but unfortunately were
having problems already. Although his computer has no ethernet port it
does have USB ports but during the broadband set up process we get a
message stating that "No network adapters can be found" and we should
install one (the cable modem has both ethernet and USB connections).
Could it be that the drivers for the USB ports have never been
installed? If so, how do I know what drivers I need? Alternatively, is
there a way to test the existing USB ports to see what's wrong with
them? Any help would be much appreciated, but as you have probably
gathered, I am NOT computer genius, so simple instructions are a must!!

Thanks in advance
Jeannie
