If the new one is the DSL-504T, then the likely cause is that they
are virtually identical products. Both the D-Link and the Netgear are
based on the TI AR7 communications processor which has an embedded
MIPS cpu running MontaVista Linux + the BusyBox toolset/shell.
Clearly the configuring interface is different - but the rest of the
code is almost the same...
On the DSL-504T, I suggest you disable DNS Relay and enter the ISP's
DNS server addresses by hand. Check that the router's DHCP server is
handing these out correctly, rather than its own address.
The other well-known problem on this (and similar) models - in case
you haven't encoutered it yet - is insufficient memory allocated to
NAT session data, and some over-long connection timeout values which
cause session table to become filled with 'stale' connection data.
This can cause problems when using peer-to-peer applications which
make many concurrent connections. Find a Telnet script which should
fix this here:
