I edited 20 mins of AVCHD video and had to re-render the file, it took 14
hours to complete the task.
What type of spec should I go for on a speed vs. ££ basis.
The 1GB of memory is a bit on the sparse side for todays
Windows based systems, even entry level desktops tend to have
2GB, but of course this also reflects falling memory prices.
So 2GB or better is preferred.
Dual core is probably best bang for the buck, it's mature.
Quad core is the emerging trend, but tends to be pricier, that
said you get what you pay for in performance and future
proofing.
Depends really on how you buy, retail boxed by Dell, HP,
or any of the other brand names, whether you go to a local
system integrator who builds to spec, or whether you build
your own.
If you buy branded you may not get an authentic retail
MS install disk, and your future options may be
restricted with regard to upgrading.
A retail OS disk, lets you revalidate it, an OEM disk
lets you use it for the life of that hardware, a mfrs
recovery disk can be a pain in the arse.
Some P4's can be upgraded, but who's to know what
you would be upgrading from, without having the
lid off the box.
I've successfully upgraded with a second user Intel
Extreme, 4GB new Crucial, and a s/h Asus mobo
at very reasonable prices on eBay.
