My daughter has a Pace Sky+ receiver and a widescreen TV.My brand new LCD TV has a couple of quirks with switching. It delays switching from the pin 8 signal for 3 seconds, considerable nuisance, and on switch on (set for Sky+) it shows in 4:3 but claims it's widescreen and is difficult to get back to normal switching; so it may not be because it is a "cheapie" model..
The Sky+ picture setting is 16:9 - RGB. Automatic widescreen
switching on her TV is often temperamental, probably because the TV is
"cheapie" CRT model. However, widescreen switching is not the main
issue - because she is happy to override the aspect ratio manually.
My daughter also has a VHS video recorder, which she uses to playI've got two Panasonic DVDRs, both with HDD. They behave slightly differently so I do not know exactly how your daughter's would behave.
tapes and record the occasional terrestrial broadcast.
She has purchased a Panasonic DVD recorder and wants to record
programmes from her Sky+ receiver. I have not yet seen the DVD - but
she says it has two SCARTS.
My daughter has asked me to connect the various pieces of equipment.I use one TV socket with RGB. I do not use S-video for this.
Before I do so, I shall need to check whether the DVD recorder has
S-video capability. I shall also need to check the number of SCART
sockets on the TV.
In the meantime, I shall be very grateul if someone could confirm:RGB can only go in one direction - in from the VCR Scart, out to the TV Scart. Composite is bi-directional on the VCR Scart.
a) whether the VCR SCART on the Sky+ receiver provides RGB output -
or whether this SCART only provides a Composite output.
b) similarly, would the VCR SCART on the Sky+ receiver provideYes, but which order you place the units depends on the point I referred to above as being different on different models.
loop-through of an incoming RGB signal (from the DVD) to the TV SCART.
The DVDRs both pass through RGB when in standby but when switched on the older one would pass either composite or RGB as configured but would not switch between them.
Assuming your daughter has a new recorder I would recommend connecting as follows:
VCR TV Scart = Sky+ VCR Scart,
Sky+ TV Scart = DVDR AV2 (configured to accept both RGB and composite (Panasonic use the word "Video" in this context),
DVDR AV1 = TV Ext 1.
The DVDR will record the RGB from Sky+ and composite from the VCR and can be left on or in standby during normal viewing, but when it is being turned on or off there will be a short break in passing the signals through.
If, however, your daughter's DVDR behaves like my older one then the above will not work when the DVDR was "on" without changing the set-up between VCR and TV (which might become tiresome); therefore I suggest:
VCR TV Scart = DVDR AV2 (configured to accept composite - called "video"),
DVDR AV1 = Sky+ VCR Scart,
Sky+ TV Scart = TV Ext 1.
The disadvantage of this method is that you cannot record in RGB.
An alternative if the DVDR does not autoswitch between RGB and composite would be connect as the first option setting AV2 to RGB and adding a video cable from the VCR to AV3 or AV4 of the DVDR. Switching source is simpler than switching settings.
You will have seen in other recent threads a warning that automatic control of recording from the Copy command would not work in either of these configurations.
