Thompson sky+160 Stuck in Standby

Hi
This is a friends box so I don't have direct access.
The current fault symptoms are box stuck in standby, but TV switches to AV1
every 1 to 1 and half minutes, with no picture.

History of fault.

Box became sluggish to respond to remote. Then friend tried a planner
rebuild which froze, (waited over 10 minutes for "housekeeping" message to
go off).

Decided to unplug box to reset, result - stuck in standby.

This is when I got involved.

Rebooted box again - no joy.
Removed card and did a forced software download - seemed to work ok.

Box still stuck in standby.

Sky tech already booked (box still under warranty), but I suspect the HDD
has died, can anyone suggest any other course of action to try.
